A Financial Wellness DO: Keep Learning!
When everything is going well, your implemented processes are productive, your team is coherent and motivated, and the business seems like a well-oiled machine—that’s the time it may be hard to imagine making significant adjustments. But it may actually be the best time to shake things up, or at least learn more so you can make positive changes.
Many leaders may be tempted to take on a “why rock the boat if there is smooth sailing ahead?” mindset. In reality, do you really have time not to learn how to be better, smarter, faster, whatever? (The answer here is ‘No’.)
To encourage growth and avoid stagnation, we should aim to take on a “can this boat go faster?” approach.
That’s not to say you must always change everything, be in a constant state of flux and have your staff, clients, and stakeholders wondering if you can stay still for two seconds. It does mean that perhaps (to stay in this sailing theme) trying out a new type of fuel, better-positioned crew members, or a turn onto a different route may offer increased returns on your time, talent, and investments.
Continuing to learn new approaches while you practice your current, successful techniques allows you to see your trajectory in a new light. Sure, your current business plan or map works great. But could it be better, faster, or more intuitive? Ask yourself if you are settling for ‘good’ when you could be ‘fantastic!’ Staying in the know of the intricacies of your industry and continuing to learn new skills and ideas lets you and your team avoid falling into complacency or boredom.
Top business owners pay attention to and adjust the flow of business to create balance.
With an open, active, and inquiring mind they can sense changes like the rise and fall of the tides, and act accordingly, deciding to stay on course or turn into the wind. Making changes can feel awkward and downright scary at times, but it is necessary for long-term success and the continual ‘freshness’ of your organization or products.
Making the time to learn continually provides several benefits, including:
keeping you up to date on the latest tech, products, or information in your field
providing inspiration for your next big thing
solidifying a base of knowledge and possibly new contacts you can turn to when you need fresh ideas and rejuvenation
There are many ways to stay updated with current ideas and offerings from other companies that will help you feel confident in your decisions. Choose to use the one that works well in your current schedule and, once in a while, even challenges you a bit. Try some of these to see which best fits your style of learning;
listening to podcasts
attending seminars/webinars
reading (or listening to) books that inspire - leadership, business, biographies
networking, in person
scouting the competition
As you let new ideas and information come to you, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of possibilities. When this happens, pause for a moment, take a breath, and remind yourself that not all “new” ideas are a good fit for you or your company, and all changes and innovations do not have to be implemented overnight.
The idea behind continual learning is to create opportunities to balance what works now with what could work in the future.
