Brighten your outlook for success!

Roses are red Violets are blue
Work can be fulfilling
If you like what you do!
Funny how a little (totally made up) poem can brighten your day.
In the last installment of the [Informer], I let you in on a few things you can do to mitigate the effects of a stressful workday. One thing I wanted to circle back to is how bringing a good, impactful dose of positivity to your day creates more success all around you; whether you are at the office, at your home office, at the beach, the park, the grocery store… ok you get it. Doing life with an aura of positive thinking simply makes everything better. Even the folks at John Hopkins think so.
The way I see it, we spend countless hours doing the work, getting to the workplace, thinking about the work, re-thinking about the work… and so on. When you care about what you do, you are tied to the outcome in unexpected ways. The passion to continue to more greatness, help more people, sell more widgets, or invent better mousetraps can be a double-edged sword of sorts.
A positive outlook is one of the best ways to push stressful thoughts out of your mind. Did you know that you can only think one thing at a time? It may not feel that way, as sometimes those thoughts can be quite speedy, almost to the point they feel as if they are overlapping. But, no. There are just one at a time.
With this in mind, here are a few practices to start or stop doing that will help you increase your positivity level and ultimately lead to you liking what you do a lot more!
I will start with my favorite one: Make someone else smile. As humans, we are set up to live and thrive in a community. Often we tend to be self-focused, but turning things around and seeing the joy on another’s face can change your outlook on how you do the work you do.
Then there’s the easiest one (in theory): Just. Breathe. Go ahead and take a deep breath. Hold it in and let it out slowly. As you do, this gives you the space to physically feel a change and shift your focus. Let the oxygen soothe your nerves for just a moment. You’ll notice a difference.
Use positive words to describe what you do. This includes using GET TO instead of having to. For instance, when you meet someone for the first time, you could tell them that you cut off thorns and toss the unwanted leaves for a living. When, in fact, you create smooth lines and space to allow rosebuds to bloom in beautiful bouquets. OR. You could tell yourself that you have to run a profit & loss statement today to see how far behind you are. But if you rephrase that to: I get to run a profit & loss statement today to see how far we’ve come this quarter, you’ll be in a much more positive mindset before completing the task. (PS: If P&L statements are a stressor for you, Benay can help you. And, yes, that was an intentional, shameless plug.)
Here is the last one for today, then you get to get back to your day! (See what I did there?) Keep a success journal. When life or work gets overwhelming, it’s nice to have a log of all the things you have done right or gone your way—the times when you were the winner and when life was full of sunshine and bluebirds. You can also list the things you are thankful for there. You might be surprised by this small daily habit’s effect on your outlook.
While there are many reasons and tactics that having a positive outlook on work and life can have, I would be remiss in leading you to think it will solve every upcoming problem and rid you of stressors forever. Life happens, and that’s why you need to have a support system, kind people around you, and a plan to keep your eyes on the good amid the not-so-good will help you fare the proverbial storms better.
At Benay, our goal is to be an integral piece of your support system. Give me a call to set your company up for success today.
All the best,
Dawn
